Finding Harmony: An Unforgettable Remembrance Day Concert at Our Care Home

Every year, we pay tribute to the fallen and veterans of past wars with a Remembrance Day Concert. This year, Gaby, also known as The D-Day Dolly, performed music that stirred up countless memories.

A Musical Journey

There was a vibrant mix of songs, ranging from the well-known Vera Lynn's 'We'll Meet Again' to Gracie Fields, 'Wish Me Luck'. Classics from the First World War, such as 'Hang Out Your Washing On The Seigfried Line' and 'It's A Long Way To Tipperary', were sung with gusto. 'Edelweiss' from The Sound of Music was much appreciated, and Russ sang every lyric. The variety of music ensured that every resident found something that sparked joy, and reminiscing of moments long ago.

Reminiscing

Over the past week, reminiscing has played a vital role in the lead-up to Remembrance Day. Residents were encouraged to share their stories and some recounted memories of loved ones who served, while others spoke about their experiences during pivotal historical events. These tales were rich in emotion and fostered a sense of community and shared history.

Both Freda and Ena served with the forces during the Second World War. Freda was a Teleprinter Operator with the WAAF, and her husband was an RAF Radio Operator. Ena signed up with the ATS and her husband was in the Army. Pictured here is a photo of Ena.

Refreshments made to

Remember

After the concert, refreshments were served which included the traditional cup of tea and biscuits made by our residents. These Remembrance Biscuits looked and tasted amazing.

Next year, perhaps Alice and the residents who love baking could make an 'Eggless Butterless Milkless Cake' also known as a 'War Cake'. Sounds interesting! Log in next year to see if this cake was selected for the next Remembrance Tea Party.

Leaving with a Heart Full of Harmony

As the event concluded, it became clear that the concert served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community, music, and remembrance. The joy experienced that day wove together a tapestry of memories, both cherished and newly created, signifying a renewed commitment to honour those who came before us.

Lest We Forget

In the morning, we held a Remembrance Service with Elaine from St Mary's Church, who provides music and inspiration for The Old Vicarage Voices Choir.

It has been said, that 'Music is the heartbeat of our memories,' as it as it encapsulates time. As each Remembrance Day passes, we should always endeavour to remember those who gave their lives and those who served their country. In the words of John Maxwell Edmonds.

'For your tomorrow

We gave our today'.
